Canon ready to blow Sony away with 75-megapixel mirrorless?

Just when it looked like Sony had tightened its stranglehold on the full-frame mirrorless market following the release of the epic a7RIV - which features a whopping 61-megapixels and can shoot 10 frames per second - news that Canon may be close to launching a rival that could best the Sony has set the internet on fire.

If rumours are correct, the EOS RL would offer more than double the resolution of the 30-MP EOS R.

Multiple rumour sites are sharing reports that Canon look set to launch a big megapixel full-frame mirrorless cameras that would join the EOS R and EOS RP in the brand’s mirrorless range. Thought to be called the EOS RL, the latest R model is rumoured to pack a sensor that will deliver 75-megapixels, though some websites are reporting the sensor could actually be up to 85-megapixels.

What’s more, there’s also expected to be a ‘high-resolution’ mode that will merge multiple files to create a single frame measuring 400-megapixels - wow!

With a rumoured 400-megapixel 'high-resolution mode', the RL would appeal to landscape photographers.

The rumoured specs list continues to impressive, with features such as Dual Pixel autofocus, built in IBIS (which would be a first for a pro-level Canon camera) and dual card slots so photographers can make an instant back-up.

With a rumoured burst rate of around 6 frames, it’s thought the RL (or whatever it ends up being called) will be targeted at landscape and portrait photographers, rather than those who need to capture action sequences.

That would leave the route clear for Canon to push ahead with a replacement for the Canon 1DX MkII which, having been launched in February 2016, is surely due for an upgrade, either in DSLR or mirrorless form.

A big megapixel full-frame mirrorless would be able to take on Sony's new a7RIV, which offers 61-MP of resolution.

No rumoured information on pricing or a potential launch date has come to light, but with such an important rival like the Sony a7RIV expected to ship in September, Canon won’t want to wait too long before bringing the big-resolution camera to market.

Rumor: Canon full-frame mirrorless already 'being used by select pro photographers'

So far, the EOS M5 is the nearest thing Canon has made to a high-end mirrorless camera. Rumors of a Canon mirrorless full-frame camera are heating up. Just days after our own Canon interview from CP+ 2018 seemed to hint, quite strongly, that a "high-end mirrorless" from Canon is in the works, Canon Rumors is reporting that they have "confirmed from a couple of good sources" that a full-frame mirrorless Canon is indeed being tested by select pros. dpreview.com »
