Recently, we covered Parrot's new Anafi AI drone – the first to use 4G connectivity as its main data link between the drone and remote. It effectively guaranteed to do away with any and all transmission limitations, especially with obstacles involved.

Now the stakes have been raised. Drone Racing League (DRL) and T-Mobile partnered to create a 5G racing drone that was able to capture footage on the same field where the movie Field of Dreams took place.

The Magenta 5G, one of the first unmanned aerial racing vehicles in the world to be equipped with 5G connectivity, made its debut at the August 12th Field of Dreams Game, in Dyersville, Iowa, where the New York Yankees competed against the Chicago White Sox. 8,000 tickets were sold to Iowa residents. A temporary field was set up amidst 159 acres of cornfields and the drone was able to fly around and live-stream all the features, including a cornfield maze of the Major League Baseball (MLB) logo outside the ballpark, with ease.

The DRL and T-Mobile drone took a trip through the house and around the ballpark where the 1989 film took place. It then gave fans a first-person-view of the actual MLB ballgame. The drone was made to capture actions sports. Equipped with a dual FPV and HD camera system, a 5s lipo battery, and more than 2400 g's of thrust, the drone was able to whip through multiple acres of fields at speeds that exceed 60 mph (96. 6 km/h).

'Drones are one of the most compelling use cases for 5G and we’re working towards a future where all drones will eventually be 5G-connected,' says T-Mobile's president of technology, Neville Ray. The drone will continue to be used at DRL events during the 2021-2022 season. Typically FPV drones used at these events contained analog transmissions, giving pilots low-latency feeds. 5G gives the pilot and viewers crisp, clear real-time footage.
