The annual CES Show in Las Vegas served up a whole bunch of new products, but perhaps the most surprising and least expected was Sharp showcasing an 8K camera that looks set to do battle with the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera.
The camera on the Sharp stand was a prototype model, but some of the specifications have come to the surface and they make for some pretty interesting reading. The 8K camera is built around a Micro Four-Thirds mount, and the prototype display model on the Sharp stand was paired with an Olympus M. Zuiko 40-150mm lens.
As the name suggests, the tiny camera will be capable of shooting ultra high-quality 8K video using the CMOS sensor and this would be recorded at 30fps - although there are reports that Sharp is actually working to enable the camera to shoot 8K up to 60fps using the H. 265 codec, which would enable videographers to capture 8K footage that can then be used to create 2x slow motion sequences.

Scenes can be lined up on a huge 5-inch vari-angle (selfie-friendly) LCD and there are a number of ports, including full-size HDMI, USB-C, Mini XLR and also ports for headphones and external mic so enhanced audio will be able to recorded and monitored. It appears that the 8K camera will offer one SD card, but it’s the potential price-tag that is really grabbing the headlines because the 8K camera is expected to sell for less than $5,000, putting it in reach for many Vloggers. The combination of a small body combined with such high-resolution video is mouth-watering.
While Sharps’ decision to bring the 8K camera to market may have caused a great deal of surprise, the launch is not completely without reason as Sharp already have a strong footing in 8K technology through the brand’s products in the broadcast industry. No information on the exact pricing or release dates is currently available, but more details are expected over the next couple of months.
