It’s been a busy time in the camera phone sector recently. First Apple dropped the iPhone 8 and X models and then Google jumped into the party with the release of the Pixel 2 - a product that DXo assessed as the best-ever camera phone to date.
Well, now it’s Huawei’s turn to try and take a piece of the pie as the brand has just released the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro.
The Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro are Huawei's latest smartphones.
Much like the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2, the two models differ by size, with the Mate 10 sporting a 5. 9-inch 2560x1440 display, with a 16:9 ratio, while the Mate 10 Pro has a 6-inch 2160x1080 18:9 display. Available in mocha brown or pink gold, both phones run on an Android platform, feature Huawei’s Kirin 970 processor chip and a high-capacity 4000 mAh battery that can charge the phone from 1% to 58% in just 30 minutes.

But, of course, it’s the camera specs that are of greatest interest and the Mate 10 phones have lots to offer. Each model sports an 8-MP front camera and dual Leica rear cameras with SUMMILUX-H lenses. Both rear cameras feature a fast maximum aperture of f/1. 6 and combine 12MP RGB and 20MP Monochrome sensors which benefit from Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) technology.

Other features include what Huawei are calling intelligent photography features, including real-time scene and object recognition which automatically chooses camera settings based on the object and scene and an AI-powered Bokeh Effect.
The lenses on the phones feature fast f/1. 6 apertures.
Photographers wishing to shoot in harsher environments will be pleased to know that the Mate 10 Pro has IP67 weatherproofing, which means it's dust resistant and can survive being in submerged in one metre of water for 30 minutes. The Mate 10 is available from late October, will have a memory capacity of 64GB and will cost 699 Euros. Meanwhile the Mate Pro will ship from November, will have a capacity of 128GB and will cost 799Euros.
