Kodak Might Try to Bring Back Kodachrome

Over the last year Fujifilm has tried to cash in on their analog history by porting over filters to digital, and recreating the "feel" of vintage gear in their mirrorless X-series. But Kodak on the other hand seem to be resolutely determined to keep the film community alive.

Earlier last year they announced that they would try to bring back Super 8, and at CES 2017 last week they revealed their intentions to re-release Ektachrome.

According to Kodak CMO Steven Overman however, Ektachrome might just be the first stock that Kodak is bringing back.

On the most recent episode of The Kodakery podcast, which was filmed live at CES, Overman and three other Kodak executives discussed the progress on Kodak's new Super 8 camera and also about film.

The whole podcast episode has lots of great information and insight, but you can also just listen to the Kodachrome part at around 23:20.

Overman says: “I will say, we are investigating Kodachrome, looking at what it would take to bring that back . . . Ektachrome is a lot easier and faster to bring back to market . . . but people love Kodak’s heritage products and I feel, personally, that we have a responsibility to deliver on that love. ”

Kodachrome would most definitely require a huge effort on behalf of labs around the world, since the process used to develop the emulsion is different from the standard E-6 one used for Ektachrome.

It would be a monumental feat for Kodak to bring back such an iconic film, and film lovers around the world (even those who never had the chance to shoot Kodachrome), will surely benefit from its revival. However, Kodak hasn't promised anything yet, so until now we'll just leave ourselves content with Ektachrome.
