Magic Lantern Is Coming to the Canon 5D Mark IV

The tech geeks over at Magic Lantern have been hard at work and, according to CanonRumors, have cracked the Canon 5D Mark IV. For those who aren’t familiar, Magic Lantern is a fan-made piece of custom firmware that runs from the SD/CF card and adds a host of new features to Canon EOS cameras that weren't included from the factory by Canon.

There’s no word on exactly what features Magic Lantern will be bringing to the 5D Mark IV, but as an indication of what the software is capable of, here are just some of features it has added to previous models; focus peaking, on-screen audio levels, custom frame rates, histogram, intervalometer and rack focusing.

Although Magic Lantern is generally regarded as being geared towards video shooters, it also has a wealth of options available for still photography. It should be noted, though, that Canon does not officially support Magic Lantern and the developers cannot guarantee that nothing will go wrong. Based on my personal experience, I’ve rarely seen or heard of anyone having an issue with it, but it’s worth bearing in mind before you dive in.

There’s no word yet on when Magic Lantern will be arriving for the 5D Mark IV, but be sure that when it does, it’ll open up a whole new set of possibilities for the camera. You can keep an eye on its progress on the Magic Lantern forums here.
