Nikon USA has announced it will release pair of firmware updates for its Z6 II and Z7 II mirrorless camera systems on February 25. The updates add, amongst bug fixes and other improvements, the ability to shoot 4K video at 60 frame per second (fps), Blackmagic Raw recording and improved Eye-AF performance.
Firmware version 1. 10 for both the Z6 II and Z7 II will bring 4K UHD video recording at up to 60 fps. Unfortunately, this shooting mode is limited to Nikon’s cropped DX-based recoding format at ‘Normal’ movie quality mode. Performance of the Eye-Detection AF features on both cameras has also been improved with the firmware update. Specifically, Nikon says ‘eyes of human subjects are detected even when the face of the subject is smaller in the frame than with Ver. 1. 00, enabling smoother and more stable shooting. ’
Also new is the ability to output Blackmagic Raw video to Blackmagic Design’s Video Assist 5” 12G HDR and Video Assist 7” 12G HDR external monitors/recorders. However, much like the Nikon Z6 and Z7, which received the Blackmagic Raw update late last year, getting this functionality requires Nikon’s $199 Raw video upgrade that involves sending your camera into a Nikon service facility for modification. However, once the update is done, you will be able to shoot with both Blackmagic Raw and ProRes Raw, depending on what external recorder you’re using. Speaking of ProRes Raw, it’s also now possible to control the ISO and color temperature settings in Final Cut Pro X when shooting ProRes Raw video to Atomos’ Ninja V external recorder.
