RED is a company best known for its amazing cameras that produce high resolution images, look like something from the future and come with a fairly hefty price-tag. Well, the future could be a lot closer after RED announced the Hydrogen One, the company’s first smartphone.
With special pre-order pricing at $1,195 for the aluminium version and $1,595 for the titanium model, the Hydrogen One is a multi-band smartphone operating on Android OS and the major headline is no doubt the device’s 5. 7-inch hydrogen holographic display that switches between what RED are calling ‘traditional 2D, holographic multi-view content, 3D content and interactive games’. RED also say the phone supports both landscape and portrait orientation views.
According to the product information data on the RED website, the smartphone is described as ‘the foundation of a future multi-dimensional media system’ and that the device will be modular based so that elements may be able to be added or removed. Does this mean users will be able to add an upgraded camera and capture high resolutions capable from the existing range of RED cameras? We shall have to wait and see!
Additional specifications are thin on the ground, although RED confirm the Hydrogen One will feature an expandable Micro SD slot and that units are expected to ship in early 2018. What are your thoughts on this shock announcement and will you be ordering a Hydrogen One?
