Ricoh has announced a sexier smaller model of their 360-degree Ricoh Theta camera series, the Ricoh Theta SC. This news comes a year after the 2015 release of the Ricoh Theta S, which was given a very warm reception.
Ricoh attributes their decision to develop this newer SC version of the Theta as a direct result of the praise for the Theta S.
Capable of capturing fully spherical images, the Theta SC shoots at 14MP resolution,
utilising twin lenses, a high-performance CMOS image sensor and a large F2. 0 maximum aperture. In full spherical video mode it shoots at 1920x1080 Full HD quality at 30fps but can only do so for a maximum duration of five minutes.
However, the Theta SC only sports a miniscule 8GB of storage space. Though Ricoh estimates the SC can hold approximately 1,600 large still images, once you start shooting video with this, those 8GBs are going to run out quickly.
The Theta SC unfortunately has no live view display of its own but can be synced up with a mobile or tablet for live view, but only for still images.
The SC is of course WiFi enabled so content can be transferred to smartphones or tablets wirelessly. Ricoh are specifically flaunting their app’s ability to post images and videos to its own theta360. com website as well as to the usual social networks including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. The app also comes with a range of editing tools so you can tailor your work before you share.
In reality, the Ricoh Theta SC isn’t intended to be a serious VR recording tool but will provide a simple 360-degree recording experience. It will retail for US$299. 95 and is available in blue, beige, pink and white.
