In a midweek hot scoop, Nikon Rumors has seemingly gotten hold of some pics of Tamron’s upcoming SP 70-200mm f/2. 8 Di VC USD G2 lens. This comes weeks ahead of its expected official announcement date at Yokohama’s CP+ event in February 2017.
That ridiculously long mouthful of a product title (give it a catchy nickname Tamron!) reflects the latest in a series of releases by Tamron that have included similar tech. Pulling back the curtain of initialisms, this second generation (G2) lens from Tamron’s Super Perfomance (SP) range has a digitally optimised (Di) coating for DSLRs and will be equipped with both the Vibration Compensation (VC) stabilisation system and the Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) for quiet running. Back in September 2016 we positively reviewed Tamron’s heftier 150-600mm f / 5-6. 3 sports shooter that had the same set of bells and whistles.
On inspection these images of this 70-200mm f/2. 8 seem legitimate, with the item captured from several angles, including a helpful close-up of the settings dial. Unlike the beastlike and far more specialist tool of 150-600mm, we expect a lot more interest in what could be a very in demand piece of journeyman kit. This is especially true if Tamron retains its policy as a slightly more budget friendly provider, and can undercut the US$2000 average price for similar products from Nikkor and Canon.
We’ll keep you informed if more news comes out the woodwork but in the meantime, we’re interested in getting our hands on one for a play. You can see the original post on the Nikon Rumors page here.
