9 Things You Need To Know About Sony’s New A6400

Just days after the CES Show in Las Vegas, Sony has grabbed the headlines again by launching a brand new APS-C camera. However, while many people expected the new model to be the a7000, Sony instead launched the a6400.

So what features and functions has Sony's latest camera got to offer? Let’s take a look…

One - Decent resolution:

The a6400 offers 24. 2-megapixels from its APS-C sensor, but it’s interesting that this is the same resolution offered in the older a6500. This could suggest Sony are planning to include a much bigger megapixel sensor in another forthcoming camera. Along with the Exmor CMOS image sensor the a6400 includes Sony's latest BIONZ X image processor.

Two - Flip screen:

Sony mentioned in the a6400 launch material that the camera is perfect for Vloggers and the inclusion of a selfie-friendly tilting 3-inch screen that flips up 180-degrees. The LCD is touch-sensitive, allowing users to establish focus or trigger the shutter with the touch of a finger.

The a6400's flip screen will be a hit with Vloggers.

Three - Insane autofocus:

Sony have gone big on the the a6400’s autofocus system. The camera features 425 phase-detection AF points and 425 contrast-detection AF points which cover around 84% of the image area. The autofocus system works in tandem with a newly-developed BIONZ X image processing engine.

Four - Really insane autofocus:

Not only can the a6400 lock on to subjects in just 0. 02seconds, but it also boasts two of Sony’s latest AF innovations. The a6400 includes Real-time Eye AF, the latest version of Sony’s Eye AF technology which locks/track focus on a subject’s eye. Eye AF support for animals will be added in summer 2019 via a system software update from Sony, which will be great news for wildlife photographers.

Five - Speedy shooting:

The a6400 can shoot 11 frames per second with full AF/AE tracking (or 8 frames per second in silent shooting mode) for up to 116 frames JPEGs or 46 frames RAW files. The speedy burst rates will be further good news to wildlife and sports photographers looking for a lightweight camera that is fast enough to still capture the moment.

Six - High ISO:

The a6400 features highest ISO range from a Sony APS-C camera, with a native ISO ceiling of 32000, which is expandable to 102400. This should allow photographers to work in low light conditions without capturing images that suffer from camera shake.

With 4K video, the a6400 boasts impressive video specs.

Seven - Video:

As we’ve already mentioned, the a6400 is well suited to Vloggers and the video specifications back this up. Sony say the a6400 is capable of shooting internal 4K (QFHD: 3840 x 2160) video with full pixel readout and no pixel binning to collect about 2. 4x the amount of data required for 4K movies, which it then oversamples it to produce high quality 4K footage. There’s Hybrid AF during video capture and, for the first time in Sony APS-C mirrorless camera, the a6400 includes a HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile. What’s more, both S-Log2 and S-Log3 are available for increased color grading flexibility, along with Zebra functionality, Gamma Display assist and proxy recording.

With a tough magnesium body, the APS-C a6400 offers 24-MP of resolution.

Eight - Time and motion:

Along with the 4K video, the a6400 can also record Full HD at 120fps at up to 100 Mbps, to create 4x or 5x slow-motion sequences with AF tracking. What’s more, the a6400 can create timelapse footage as the camera features built-in interval recording that can be set anywhere between 1 and 60 seconds, with a shot range up to 9999.

Nine - Durability and price:

The a6400 features a tough magnesium alloy body and boasts a shutter design that’s rated for around 200,000 cycles. The a6400 can also be customised with 89 functions that are assignable to 8 custom keys. Scheduled to start shipping in February, the a6400 is priced at $900 in the US or 1050 Euros (body only).
