Analog photography fans, make sure you have a fresh change of pants handy. This triumphant video by the Camera Repair Centre in Halifax, Canada gloriously shows the amount of effort and precision required to clean an old SLR.

Their team recently overhauled a Pentax K1000, which was the “dirtiest Pentax [they’ve] seen in a very long time”, and made it as good as new – new paint coating and all.

The video showed a 3 to 4 hour process and edited it down to 2. 5 minutes, although we are surprised in the first place that it only takes such a short time to actually perform a CLA. Maybe if we did it, it would take 8 hours, since I’m sure these experts have handled classics like the K1000 countless times.

This rugged workhorse from Pentax is known for being near unbreakable, and hence is a stalwart of photography classrooms around the world. When I first started doing film photography over a decade ago, the first camera my teacher recommended was a K1000. The Pentax K1000 was manufactured and available new from 1976 all the way up to 1996.

The video reveals how intricate even those old film cameras are, so we can only imagine the difficulty of fixing a contemporary DSLR. And to top it off, the Camera Repair Centre even filmed the whole thing using two old Pentax lenses; the M42 SMC 50mm f/4 Macro and Super-Takumar 50mm f/1. 4 – how’s that for dedication?
