Apple do not make mistakes. Just kidding! But credit given where credit’s due, Apple are extremely adept at hiding what mistakes it does make under the auspices of some grand plan. The newest example of this is their latest price drop on Apple peripherals.
With the unveiling of the new MacBook Pro last week, creatives worldwide let out a collective scream of frustration. Having been informed that the latest incarnation would replace standard USB slots (for USB-C connections) and forego SD card slots completely, many were left wondering how this laptop was at all being aimed at professionals. This was without mentioning the amusing irony that plugging an iPhone to the Macbook Pro would even require an adaptor, yet that supposedly outdated 3. 5mm headphone jack would remain.
Following the immediate outrage and what could only be called a condescending paternal response from Phil Schiller, a lot of pro photogs couldn’t be blamed for feeling slightly jaded. Many have expressed interest in switching to Microsoft’s own newly announced Surface Studio. Beautifully dull but practical SD card slots for moving your camera files over efficiently? Yes please. Oh and an interface from our wildest tech dreams? Hubba hubba.
But Apple wants to prove that it’s still the one for us and assure you that purchasing the pile of necessary accessories to connect your existing drives and devices to the new MacBook Pro won’t break the bank. As a strange kind of carrot for consumers, Apple has now dropped the listed price on a wide range of dongles, adapters, and cables
Courtesy of Engadget, the new prices in the Apple Store are as follows:
USB-C to USB Adapter drops from $19 to $9
Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter drops from $49 to $29
USB-C to Lightning Cable (1m) drops from $25 to $19
USB-C to Lightning Cable (2m) from $35 to $29
USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter from $69 to $49
USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter from $69 to $49
SanDisk Extreme Pro SD UHS-II Card USB-C Reader drops from $49 to $29
All other third party USB-C peripherals ~25% off
In addition to these price reductions, MacRumors have discovered that included in the 25% USB-C peripheral price cuts are, incredibly, the recently announced LG 4K and 5K ultrafine displays. That’s a fall from US$700 to $524, and $1,300 to US $974 respectively.
The kicker to all this moneysaving joy however is the sad fact that these offers are only temporary and will end as of 31 December 2016. Yes, Apple may be willing to throw its potential poorer pre-order buyers a bone as a show of goodwill but as mentioned, they do not make mistakes. Any permanent decrease in adapter prices would be seen as a backtrack or concession to the idea that they may have made such a mistake.
Still for anyone looking for a deal on Apple wares it would be pretty foolish to ignore this bounty of saving opportunities, but we’ll find out soon enough if cut-price dongles are enough to entice users to stay with Apple.
