It appears that Canon continues to research image stabilization in tilt-shift lenses. Are we possibly going to see more tilt-shift lenses in the future with IS? Or are we a ways away and likely won’t see such a thing until the next updates in a decade or so.

Correction: I said this patent was from 2010, when it is in fact from July of 2017. Keith over at Northlight uncovered a patent application from 2010 July, 2017 that shows a tilt-shift lens with both autofocus and image stabilization. canonrumors.com »

We’ve been sent an image that is apparently one of the new tilt-shift lenses that Canon will be releasing soon. We do not have confirmation of the focal length of the three upcoming tilt-shift lenses, but we’re assuming the 45mm and 90mm version will be replaced and we’ll get a new focal length for the Read more... canonrumors.com »

We reported in mid July that Canon would be announcing a series of three lenses, though we weren’t sure what “series” meant. Now we’re told that the three new lenses would be tilt-shift lenses and will be announced at the end of August 2017. canonrumors.com »

Canon has been exploring quite a bit of methods of doing tilt in a more automated fashion, from having the lens electronically controlled to this patent application (2024-057829) that has the tilt movement controlled inside the camera itself.
This patent application (2024-025274) discusses how to automate the tilt movement given the objects that the user wants in focus, but more importantly when you want to tilt the plane of focus to something other than horizontal or vertical.
We have been told that Canon will announce at least three new lenses ahead of the CP+ Photo & Imaging Show in Yokohama, Japan which takes place between February 22 – February 25, 2024. We were not told what lenses to expect, but that a niche part of the market would be addressed.
When we were first discussing the series of patent applications on motorized tilt-shift lenses for the RF mount, one of my musings was the ability to use this to automate stitching and various shooting at different shifts and tilts.
We recently discussed the patent here that talked about a motorized tilt-shift lens. It was my imagination that Canon could expand the functionality far beyond simply lens control. Well, it turns out the smart minds at Canon thought the same.
