Drone Catches Newlyweds In Lucky Rooftop Shot

Travel photographer Brandon Li managed to snag a one-in-a-million chance drone shot of a couple sprawled out on a roof in full wedding regalia. Li, who is best known for his viral hit video ‘Hong Kong Strong’, was practicing drone flying techniques for an upcoming short film.

“I was focusing on city skyline silhouettes at sunset but also I love top-down shots,” Li explains. “So we were using the return-to-home flights to catch whatever was directly below en route back to the launch site. “

Due to the LCD screen being completely washed out by the harsh daylight, Li had no idea what he had inadvertently captured on one of these return flights. It was only during the editing process that he noticed a bride and groom lying on their backs in snow angel poses in a rooftop garden.

Using Affinity Photo, he removed what appeared to be another person and some extra clothes from the grass, then desaturated the city and tinted the mids towards teal. “I wanted to convey the coldness of the environment surrounding the happy couple,” he says. “I felt they were making their little oasis of joy in the big city. ”

After posting the image to his Facebook as a cover image Li faced an unexpected reaction as people wondered who these newlyweds were. “People seemed to be intrigued by it. They started offering to help me find the mystery couple. ”

As of yet they still have not been identified though people have figured out that the grassy topped building is the prestigious J Residence in the clubbing district, Wan Chai.

With most our team living and working in Hong Kong, it’s quite easy for us to forget just how much is going on right above us in one of the most densely packed cities in the world. This certainly won’t be the last bizarre sighting a drone will pick up in the neighbourhood. If any of our eagle-eyed readers know who these two are, please don’t hesitate to let us know so we can wish them well and give them a wedding present!
