Sony has announced the Xperia 5, the latest addition to its flagship smartphone lineup. The new phone brings technology from Sony’s Xperia 1 smartphone and puts them in a slightly more manageable size.
The Xperia 5 features a 21:9 CinemaWide 6. 1-inch Full HD+ OLED display with wide gamut BT. 2020 color space support. The screen uses technologies from Sony’s Bravia TV systems to help bring High Dynamic Range (HDR) technologies to its latest smartphone. Another neat feature of the Xperia 5 is a new Creator mode, a feature inspired by Sony’s Master Series TV systems that ensures color accuracy on par with reference displays. Like the Xperia 1, the Xperia 5 display achieves 10-bit tonal gradation using temporal dithering (8 bit display with 2 bit FRC), which makes it possible to support the ITU-R BT. 2020 color space. The display's color gamut covers all of the DCI-P3 color space (with Illuminant D65).
Sony has also added Dolby Atmos surround sound technology to add ‘breathtaking realism’ to audio coming from the device, whether you’re using headphones or the built-in stereo speakers on the Xperia 5.
On the imaging front, the Xperia 5 uses a triple-camera setup with 12-megapixel sensors behind each of the three lenses: a 16mm, a 26mm and a 52mm (35mm equivalent). The main 26mm camera features a 1/2. 6" sensor with 1. 5cal SteadyShot image stabilization is available on the main and telephoto cameras.
On the computational side, up to 12 image frames are constantly buffered for image stacking. HDR capture combines up to 3 frames of varying exposure, and in low light multiple frames of the same exposure time are combined with one long exposure to mitigate noise.
The main camera unit utilizes a stacked CMOS sensor with DRAM. The memory on the imaging chip allows for advanced features like an anti-distortion electronic shutter, fast frame rates and high speed video up to 960 fps.
Sony has also brought its Eye AF technology to the Xperia 5, featuring deep-learning based face detection for fast initial eye detection, and what Sony calls 'Eye Stabilizer' technology which attempts to track the eye initially acquired. Continuous burst shooting is available up to 10 fps with AF/AE calculations taking place at up to 30 fps. 'Bokeh mode' is available on the telephoto camera, and uses both dual pixel information and segmentation (machine learning based face detection) to generate a depth map. The depth map is stored as metadata for post-processing purposes in software like Google Photos. Only one frame is captured in this mode, leading to decreased image quality due to the lack of frame averaging.
For mobile cinematography, the Xperia 5 has 4K HDR capability thanks to 10-bit HLG video capture using the HEVC codec; however, HDR capture utilizing multiple exposures per frame is not available. The Cinema Pro “powered by CineAlta” app provides 'pro' video settings like white balance, shutter angle, and manual focus assist, and also provides a set of 'looks' that are intended to match color output of high-end CineAlta cameras. Optical and electronic image stabilization are used in conjunction with one another for smooth, gimbal-like footage. This works best with the main 26mm camera unit, thanks to its memory stack. Continuous autofocus is available in video, but is restricted to a center point only.
