Fresh on the heels of Google’s Pixel 2 and the iPhone X, Sony has launched a pretty special smartphone that is sure to tick plenty of boxes for photographers. The Xperia XA2, the most impressive of three new phones, was unveiled to tech journalists on the floors of the annual CES show in Las Vegas and its specs make it clear this is a phone for the selfie generation.

The slimline XA2 Ultra tips the scales at just 221 grams.

There’s no doubt the headline feature of this smartphone is the rear camera, which boasts a massive 23-megapixel Exmor RS sensor. Yes, this smartphone has a higher-resolution sensor than some entry-level DSLRs. The high megapixel count aims to capture images high in detail and low in noise. What’s more, Sony say that, despite the high-resolution, the camera is fast, too – going from launch to capture in just 0. 6 seconds.

The Xperia XA2 Ultra has plenty to offer from its front-facing side too, with the smartphone offering not one, but two, front-facing cameras. Selfie camera number one is a high resolution 16-Megapixel camera that boasts Optical Image Stabilisation technology which Sony says delivers ‘sharp, bright selfies’, along with a Night Portrait Flash for ‘blur-free shots with natural-looking skin tones. ’ Selfie camera number two offers something different; while only serving up 8-megapixels of resolution, the camera has a very wide field of view - to be exact, it gives a 120° field of view, which is especially useful for group portraits.

The wide 120° field of view is perfect for group portraits.

Whichever of the three camera you use, images can composed and then be reviewed on the six-inch Full HD screen made from durable Gorilla Glass. What’s more, the Xperia XA2 Ultra has plenty to interest budding videographers, as the smartphone can capture ultra high-resolution 4K footage and can shoot slow motion footage at 120 frames per second.

Other notable features include a beefy battery capacity of 3,580 mAh and the phone offers a 'Smart Stamina' mode that predicts how long your power will last based on 'how you normally use your phone'. What’s more, the XA2 Ultra can be used with an optional quick charge unit to get hours worth of charge in just a few minutes.

Sony are offering two storage options (32GB or 64GB), but the XA2 Ultra is also compatible with Micro SDXC cards. The phone is light at just 221grams and is expected to start shipping in February, but there is no information on the price-tag just yet.
