The news about Canon developing a 120-megapixel sensor has been out for a while - in fact, the company showed off prototypes of its high resolution technology at the 2016 Canon Expo in Shanghai after previously announcing the development in 2015.
Well, now Canon has ramped up the hype by releasing a video (watch below) on Youtube showcasing examples of what the sensor can achieve. Needless to say, the footage is mind-blowing!
Canon explains that the 120MXS is an ultra-high resolution CMOS sensor with 13280 x 9184 effective pixels (approximately 60x the resolution of Full HD). The sensor has a size equivalent to APS-H (29. 22mm x 20. 20mm) sensors, which were found in earlier Canon pro DSLRs, such as the 1D MkIII, and that the sensor boasts a square pixel arrangement of 2. 2µm x 2. 2µm with 122 million effective pixels.
How is all this resolution possible? Well Canon explains it’s thanks to parallel signal processing, which ‘reads signals at high speed from multiple pixels. All pixel progressive reading of 9. 4fps is made possible by 28 digital signal output channels. ’
The video shows both the resolving power of the sensor and also how it performs under 7x magnification in a real-world outdoor setting. The results are truly mind blowing and points to the direction Canon may be looking to take their cameras. Unfortunately, no information on when the sensor will come to market is available.
