It’s only been a few weeks since Canon pulled the covers off the EOS R – the brand's first-ever full-frame mirrorless camera - yet the rumour mill has swung into overdrive again with suggestions that there may be yet more new cameras on their way.
Although Canon had no big product announcements at the recent Photokina Show in Germany, rumour websites are reporting that the brand may instead use the CP+ Show in Japan (which runs during late February), to unveil further products in the mirrorless line up.
At present, the rumours point to two cameras that could be launched. The first is described as a ‘full-blown’ professional model - which could either mean an increase in megapixels over the 30-megapixel EOS R - or maybe a mirrorless take on the 1DX MkII. Either way, if such a camera does appear, it’s likely to become Canon’s flagship mirrorless model.
Also doing the rounds is suggestions of a EOS R model that could feature an APS-C sensor. If a move to a smaller sensor is true, this would likely indicate a greater focus on both speed (burst rates) and video specifications over all-out resolution and megapixels.
The CP+ Show could also be the platform for Canon to introduce newer DSLR cameras to the market too. The brand’s flagship APS-C mode - the 20-megapixel 7D MkII that can shoot 10fps - was launched way back in 2014 and has been outclassed by rivals, namely Nikon’s D500 DSLR, which has more than double AF points of the 7D MkII, features a tilting screen and can shoot 4K video compared to the 7D MkII’s Full HD.
What’s more, even the 5DMkIV will be around three years old when CP+ rolls around so will Canon decide to introduce an upgraded model? While it's only rumours at this stage, it seems believable that there could be some big announcements just around the corner for Canon. What do you think Canon will launch next and which features in particular would you like to see in the new models?
