Ever since the first iPhone launched in 2007, Apple have completely clobbered the smartphone competition by offering an unparalleled integrated user experience. With so many Android smartphones on the market, Google sought to unify the ecosystem with the Nexus in 2010.
The company's progression into smartphone development was met with muted success, drowned out by the vast array of Android models out there.
Now Google are back with the Pixel phone, which sports 4k video capture and an aperture of f/2 designed to capture more light than a regular smartphone camera. But we all know that the war cannot be won on specs and megapixels alone.
What makes the Google Pixel a real threat to Apple iPhone is that it will be offering its own tailored ecosystem to users. This is big news because in the past, there wasn’t a significant difference between the user experience of a Google Nexus and Samsung Galaxy user.
What’s more, Google is offering Pixel users an exceptional service as people will have exclusive access to free and unlimited full-resolution photo and video storage. The Next Web beautifully sums the feature up as an unlimited camera roll that will certainly come in handy for RAW and 4K video shooters. It’s also an impressive and bold move given that Amazon recently nixed its US$12 unlimited cloud photo storage service for being too cheap!
Apple only offers 5GB of free iCloud storage across all of its services so the cost benefit of buying a US$649 Pixel could really start stacking for heavy data users. The air of exclusivity surrounding these set of cloud features coupled with a powerful camera might even have iPhonographers thinking twice about their next mobile purchase.
Google are so proud of the Pixel that the handset is confidently priced to compete directly with the iPhone 7, but only time will time whether or not it can create an Android fan to rival the Apple diehards.
