Galaxy S8 to Feature Dual Camera, Possibly Due to Note7 Failure

The meltdown from Samsung's Note7 fiasco continues as the Korean manufacturer now has to deal with all the suppliers they angered from the recall of their flagship smartphone. Reports from Korea are suggesting that since Samsung had ordered so many camera parts that they are no longer using, the Galaxy S8 will now have to feature a dual-camera setup and an iris scanner.

This would placate suppliers, as Samsung would use the parts they originally ordered on a different model. Currently these include Samsung Electro-Mechanics, which supplies camera modules, Sekonix, which makes lenses for smartphones, and Kolen, which produces lenses for iris scanners. MCNEX and Patron, two other suppliers, were originally contracted to make iris scanners for the Note7, are now rumoured to be reassigned to making them for the Galaxy S8.

The Korea Herald, which initially published these reports, says that Samsung has not officially confirmed this information. Rather, the news came from an official working at one of the suppliers.

He was quoted on the condition of anonymity as saying, “Samsung never uses the same camera for its flagship models, upgrading the camera of its flagship device every year, so there surely will be an improvement (for the S8 camera). "

The S8 will be announced next February, so until then we can only speculate on the next generation features of Samsung's flagship model. Dual-camera makes a lot of sense since Apple, Huawei, LG, HTC, and Xiaomi are all making smartphones with this feature. So as long as Samsung prevent the S8 from blowing up like the Note7, everything should be rosy for both the Korean behemoth and its suppliers, who are expected to earn a big boost to their revenue with this plan.

Throwback Thursday: the Samsung NV10

Pretty? Yes. Well-built? Yes. Image quality? Ehhh. . . In 2007, I was chiefly concerned with three things: fixing whatever had recently broken on my 1980 Datsun 210, scouring the electronics section of the local Goodwill in an endless quest for a louder stereo, and finding older computer games that my home-built PC would play acceptably well. dpreview.com »

Samsung uses brain-inspired processors to create digital camera 'vision'

Samsung has used IBM’s neuromorphic computer processors, built under the latter company’s TrueNorth project, to create digital ‘eyes’ that see in real time. The IBM TrueNorth processors are composed of 4096 small cores that simulate brain neurons, the primary advantage being faster data processing with lower comparative energy usage. dpreview.com »
