GoPro has today announced two updates to its action cam line-up. The HERO 5 Black is GoPro's new flagship model and is waterproof down to 33 feet (10 meters) without a housing. Its 1/2. 3" sensor is capable of shooting video up to 4K resolution at 30 frames per second or 12MP still images in JPEG or Raw format.
The camera features and parameters can be controlled via a 2" touch display or a range of voice controls. There is also a button to start and stop recording. Stereo sound is recorded via three built-in microphones that feature GoPro's advanced wind noise reduction. The electronic video stabilization has been further improved and the camera comes with a built-in GPS module. The new model is compatible with all existing GoPro mounts and will be available October 2 for $399.
The HERO 5 Session comes in the same ultra-compact display-less form factor as the original Session but has been upgraded all around and offers many of the same features as the HERO 5 Black. Like its top-end sibling, the HERO 5 Session is waterproof without a housing to 33 Feet (10 meters) and features voice control. It can record 4K video at 30 frames per second but still images are, compared to the HERO 5 Black, captured at a slightly lower 10MP resolution and the Raw format is not supported. The HERO5 Session will be available October 2 for an MSRP of $299. 99.
Both cameras can be used with the new GoPro Plus subscription service. When the cameras are plugged in to charge content is uploaded to the cloud and can then be edited and shared from any device. GoPro Plus also gives you access to a music library for editing, a 20% discount for accessories at GoPro. com and premium support. The service starts on October 2 and will will cost $4. 99 per month after a free trial.
