Leica Q2 owners are experiencing issues with unreadable Raw files

Reports are coming out that select Leica Q2 full-frame compact cameras are facing an issue wherein certain Raw files are unreadable after they’ve been captured. As reported by PetaPixel, photographer Josh Byers first noticed the issue when he was shooting an event with his Leica Q2 camera.

Upon offloading the images from the event, he realized all images he captured in the Q2’s ‘continuous super speed’ drive mode, which captures images at up to 20 frames per second, gave him an error on importing, while other images shot in different drive modes imported without problem.

In speaking to PetaPixel, Byers said:

‘I tried to import in Lightroom, Photoshop, Capture One, Adobe DNG Converter and all did the same thing. They recognized the first images but did not recognize the ones shot in this “continuous super speed” mode. I’m stuck now not being able to process images from the event. ’

Despite not being recognized by the programs mentioned above, Byers noted that the files were viewable using macOS’s Preview image viewer app, but they weren’t being recognized anywhere else. ‘[I] could export them possibly as a TIFF, but as I shot these in RAW I really need to be able to process them,’ he tells PetaPixel, ‘so for my purposes, they are pretty much useless. ’

It doesn’t appear to be an isolated incident either; upon turning to the Leica support forums, Byers discovered other users have encountered the issue as well. After contacting Leica USA support, Byers received confirmation that Leica Germany had been made aware of the issue and is working on a firmware fix to remedy it.

[I’m] not sure why Leica hasn’t pushed this out faster because I know there are others like me who have files in limbo they can’t use [. . . ] At the very least they should be warning their users not to use this mode.

Byers wraps up his thoughts on the ordeal, telling PetaPixel ‘[I’m] not sure why Leica hasn’t pushed this out faster because I know there are others like me who have files in limbo they can’t use [. . . ] At the very least they should be warning their users not to use this mode. ’

DPReview has contacted Leica for comment on the issue. We will update this article if we receive a statement. In the meantime, it’s in your best interest to avoid the ‘continuous super speed’ mode if you own a Leica Q2 camera system until the next firmware update.

What Happened to this Badly Burned Leica Camera?

For the sky-high prices they often come at, their durability, and the quality of the images they produce, Leica cameras are among the most coveted gear among photographers. They’re usually treated with care that’s borderline reverence and devotion – which is why we, and we guess many of you guys as well, were shocked when we stumbled upon the picture of this Leica camera that’s burned so bad it’s barely recognizable now. thephoblographer.com »
