The 2017 Sony World Photography awards has announced their shortlist for this year’s entries and the works on show are astounding. A staggering 227,596 images were entered into the 10th edition of the contest from over 183 countries.
They were split between the Professional Competition (110,270), Open Competition (105,692) and Youth categories (11,634). After exhaustive work by the judges, a total of 49 nationalities are represented on the shortlist. Sponsored by Sony and produced by the World Photography Organisation this content represents some of the best current photography in the world.
World Photography Organisation CEO, Scott Gray, noted on the judges’ dedication to their task saying: “Beautiful works of photographic art, not snapshots, have been presented to the judges and I am delighted to see that our esteemed juries have chosen to reward the pure skill, artistic interpretation and thoughtfulness of the photographer, rather than simply the subject matter the photographer has captured. ”
These shortlist entrants are now in the running to claim a selection of truly massive cash prizes if they win. The top prize of Photographer of the Year will be US$25,000, with US$5,000 going to the overall Open winner. €30,000 (US$31,600) of equipment will go to the university of the winner of the Student Focus award. This is in addition to a wealth of other goodies from Sony.
Gray commented on the success of the competition over a decade: “The Sony World Photography Awards has celebrated photographers and photography throughout its ten-year history, we now look forward to ensuring that photography has a global platform and is recognised as the dynamic, exciting and accessible medium it is. ”
The full winners of the awards will be announced on 20 April 2017. Works by the winners will be put on display at a special exhibition at Somerset House, London from 21 April 2017. After 7 May 2017 the exhibition will tour worldwide. Tickets are available on the World Photo site.
