Ever lined up a scene with your camera and wished you could capture more in the frame? Well, with a 360 camera you can capture it all and, these days, you have a big choice of product options to select from.
So what is 360 photo and video? As the name suggests, these products give you an uninterrupted 360-degree view of a scene. This is achieved by using two, ultra wide-angle lenses that combine to produce a single 360-degree image. Along with being able to capture stills, most of these models will also help you capture 360-degree video, too - sometimes in ultra high-quality 4K. What’s more, some of these options allow for the 360 video to be streamed over the internet so everybody can see the bigger picture and used for Virtual Reality (VR) applications. Ricoh THETA V
Ricoh’s latest version of THETA has a load of new features from the previous S model that makes it one of the best 360 devices on the market. The THETA V is capable of capturing high-definition, 14-megapixel 360-degree stills. These images can then be transferred to smart devices like your phone or tablet and uploaded to Facebook to share with the world.
What’s more, the THETA V also shoots 360-degree footage in ultra high-quality 4K footage at 30 frames per second that can be live streamed and used with Virtual Reality (VR) applications. The THETA supports H,264 and H. 265 compression standards and can capture audio from an additional built-in four-channel microphone that supports 360-degree spatial audio. Samsung Gear 360
Samsung’s Gear 360 weighs just 130g, but can capture 360-degree images and 4K high-quality video files. Compatible with Android and iOS devices, users can transfer images and film via the Samsung Gear app. Featuring a battery life of around 130 minutes per charge, the Samsung Gear 360 can take micro SD cards with capacities up to 256GB. Built around dual CMOS 15-megapixel sensors, the Samsung is dust and water resistant so you don’t need to worry about taking it on your adventures. Nikon Keymission 360
Nikon’s Keymission 360 is a rugged device that can shoot 360-degree images and ultra high-quality videos at 4K resolution. Dustproof, waterproof down to 30 metres and freezeproof to -10 degrees, the device is also shockproof to 2 metres so is an excellent choice if you intend to inflict some punishment on your 360 camera or are seeking a camera for extreme sports. Featuring two Nikkor ultra wide-angle lenses, the Keymission is small, weighing just 198g and measuring 6. 6cm x 6. 1cm and has Wi-Fi and Nikon’s Snapbridge technology so you can transfer files to a smartphone and then share footage and images. Kodak Pixpro SP360
Kodak’s Pixpro camera features compact dimensions, shoots 4K video at 30 frames per second and and features a 12-megapixel camera that will capture images with a 235-degree viewing angle. Now, to get true 360-degree images, you’ll need two SP360 cameras, which mount together to produce the full picture image. The camera is freezeproof, dustproof and splash resistant. Rylo 360
Brand new to the market is the Rylo, a 360-camera that can record 4K footage at 30 frames per second in 360 thanks to two 208-degree f/2. 8 lenses on either side of the body. What’s different about Rylo is that it enables users to edit and create videos on the go, without the need of editing back at the computer. Weighing just 108g, the Rylo has an interchangeable battery good for 60 minutes' recording and ships with a 16GB Micro SD card (the camera supports up to 256GB).
