Panasonic dropped some big news at the Photokina Show in Germany by announcing two full-frame mirrorless cameras - the S1 and SR1, which will arrive in early 2019. Built around the new S-mount, which is the same as the Leica L-mount and is delivered as part of a new partnership between Panasonic Leica and Sigma, the specifications of both cameras is impressive.

So what’s the difference between the two upcoming cameras, which Panasonic say are targeted at professional photographers? Well, while the S1 will offer a 24-megapixel full-frame sensor, the S1R will feature a 47-megapixel full-frame sensor, giving photographers a choice when it comes to resolution and presumably price (although no cost information was available).

The S1R will boast big 47-megapixel resolution.

Both cameras will feature a new Venus Engine processor unit, and what Panasonic are calling ‘world’s first full-frame mirrorless camera equipped with Dual I. S. image stabilisation’ which they explain will ‘enable handheld shots for dark or distant scenes that would previously have required additional equipment’. This In-Body Image Stabilisation (IBIS) will be backed up by lens IS. All that stabilisation will also help videographers using the new cameras, which will support 4K at up to 60p.

Slides presented at the Photokina show also revealed the S1 and S1R will feature a large, high resolution Electronic Viewfinder (EVF), which Panasonic claim is ‘close to human vision’. The ‘targeted at professionals’ claim seems to be back-up by the build capabilities, with another slide showing that there’ll be 100% sealing on all seams, dials and buttons, along with an extremely robust shutter and the ability to perform in low temperatures – in fact, prototype versions have already been in use at the South Pole and have withstood -40-degree temperatures.

Although there aren’t a huge amount of other details about the two, in-development cameras, Panasonic also disclosed that both models will feature a rugged triaxial tilt LCD, and that there’ll be two memory card slots (one XQD, on SD).

Known for the brand’s successful Micro-Four Thirds system cameras like the acclaimed GH5 and the G9, Panasonic has chosen an interesting time to step into the full-frame mirrorless game, as the brand just celebrated ten years of the MFT system. However, the presentation at Photokina made it clear that both systems will co-exist alongside each other.

Panasonic's new cameras are joined by a new lens mount partnership with Leica and Sigma.

Panasonic also announced it will be developing more than ten lenses for the new S-mount by 2020, with a 50mm/F1. 4 prime lens, 24-105mm standard zoom lens, and 70-200mm telephoto zoom lens available in early 2019 when the two new cameras launch.

The higher-resolution S1R looks set to go head-to-head with rivals such as the newly-released 46-megapixel Nikon Z7 and the more established Sony A7RIII, which offers 42-megapixels of resolution.
