At a press event in New York City, Sony has unveiled the a6500 and RX100 Mark V. The a6500, touted by Sony as a compliment to the existing Alpha range rather than a replacement for the a6300, will feature 425 point PDAF, 5 axis SteadyShot stabilisation, a touchscreen and 11fps burst.
The a6500 is Sony’s top-end APS-C camera. Its touchscreen will work as a touchpad, even when inactive, and its in-body stabilisation will be equivalent to 5. 0 stops faster shutter speed, according to Sony.
The camera has been designed for speed, much like the a6300, and features a redesigned 24. 2 MP sensor with an improved LSI. 4k shooting is included, alongside a more powerful processor, which should help to address the rolling shutter issues encountered by its predecessor.
Visually, the camera looks very similar to the a6300 and a6000, but it will be marketed as a higher-end product, with a price tag of US$1400 in the US and ˆ1700 in Europe. The a6500 will be available in December in both regions.
The RX100 Mark V, meanwhile, will boast 315 phase-detection AF points, which will give coverage over 65% of the frame. Sony claims that the compact powerhouse has the world's fastest AF speed at 0. 05 seconds. Its 20. 1MP resolution sensor, combined with a new processing chip can achieve 24fps in burst mode, an outstanding rate of shooting for a compact camera.
UHD in 4k (14MP oversampled by 1. 7x for added clarity) and 960fps slow motion (for up to 8 seconds) are both available, and a redesigned LCD screen will tilt 180 degrees upward and 45 degrees downward for more versatility in shooting stills and video. Eye AF also makes its way to the RX100 Mark V, although only in AF-C mode.
The RX100 Mark V will be available in October for US$1000 or ˆ1200.
Overall, Sony has once again outdone itself with these two products, both offering significant upgrades over previous models as Sony continues to innovate at an incredible pace.
