Sony may be updating their old screw driven 85mm f/1. 4 ZA lens, which was first introduced back in 2006. While still a good lens, it’s long been overdue for a upgrade. The original design featured 8 elements in 7 groups, and 9 circular diaphragm blades.
Apparently the new one will be announced shortly with Zeiss T-Coatings, SSM, and weather-sealing.
The most important bit of information however, may be in the manufacturer. Currently none of the ZA lenses are made by Zeiss or Cosina, which is a trusted Zeiss partner in Japan.
While they do feature the name and design of Zeiss, Sony Zeiss lenses have never been made in Germany.
Photo Rumors has heard that the new 85mm f/1. 4 ZA will be manufactured by Cosina Co Ltd in Japan, which is an incredibly welcome surprise. Cosina also make several Zeiss lenses for Zeiss and Voigtlander in the Leica M-mount, and are known for their high quality. While Kyocera made the Zeiss Contax 645 lenses, Cosina has made the Zeiss Ikon and all the ZF lenses for Canon and Nikon.
Now that Sony have turned their attentions back to the a-mount with the A99 II, a revamp of the A-mount portfolio makes a lot of sense, and is a great sign of things to come for A-mount shooters.
