Anyone with any significant amount of experience shooting portraits will be familiar with the Canon EF 85mm f/1. 2L II USM. It’s an excellent portrait shooter, but it does have its flaws, especially with autofocus and chromatic aberration.
Those are just two of the issues Canon presumably hope to tackle with the rumoured update to the lens, said to be coming in 2017.
Including IS, the lens should be a wet dream for portrait photographers who like to shoot from the hip. According to CanonRumors, the EF 85mm f/1. 4L IS USM is a CR3 (the site’s highest level of certainty on a rumour) and may be an alternative to the 85mm f/1. 2L – or could replace it entirely.
In either case, it will be a direct challenge to the Tamron 85mm f/1. 8 Di VC USD and the Sigma 85mm f/1. 4 DG HSM Art lenses, both available for the EF mount for US$700 and US$1,000, respectively. If this lens can reproduce the gorgeous bokeh of its f/1. 2L sibling while adding IS and better AF performance, Canon may have a big seller on its hands.
