Canon has launched its smallest, lightest, and cheapest RF mount body yet. Meet the Canon EOS R100, a $480 mirrorless camera that, despite being launched today, May 24, 2023, already feels old. That’s because it’s essentially a slower, RF-mount version of the M50 Mark II.
The Nikon Z series is no longer in its infancy — and that means the company isn’t just launching the must-have lenses but the envy-induing luxuries. The Nikon Z 85mm f1. 2 S might just be one of those luxuries.
Modern camera lenses work very hard to fight imperfections, adding elements to correct chromatic aberration, spherical aberration, and a whole host of other issues. Ironically, at the same time, software programs are embracing classically inspired presets and adding in things like digital flare.
When Nikon launched the Z system, the cameras came with a promise: wider aperture lenses. The Nikon Noct 58mm f0. 95 S fulfills that promise. With an extremely wide aperture, this lens introduces more light-gathering power and bokeh to the full-frame mirrorless system.
While the nifty fifty gets all the attention, a 90mm prime brings that bokeh in closer. The Leica M-mount system doesn’t have any shortage of 90mm options. The Leica Summicron M 90mm f2 is brighter than the company’s Macro f4, yet less than half the price of the Summilux M 90mm f1.
The Leica M system has several great portrait lenses. The Leica Macro Elmar 90mm f4, however, is often overlooked. While it doesn’t have the f2 of the Summicron, this 90mm is incredibly tiny, focuses in closer, and comes in a little less expensive.
I’ve long recommended the nifty fifty as one of the first lenses for beginners to add to their DSLR kit. With a bright aperture and a price often around or even under $200, the nifty fifty is an easy choice.
