When it comes to sensor technology, Nikon has been taking a back seat in recent years. While their cameras, like the Nikon Z9 and Z8, have been breaking new ground in the mirrorless segment, they have had to rely on Sony to produce sensors for these (and other) cameras.

Nikon has been known to try crazy and brave things every now and again. Years ago, they made the Nikon 1 series and used Ashton Kutcher to propel it forward. It was in baseball stadiums all around, and it was beating Sony's NEX lineup in many ways. thephoblographer.com »

Eight years ago, the Canon 5D II hit the streets, and it took the industry by storm, not only for being an excellent stills camera but because it could record professional-grade 1080P video too. I've been in this industry long enough to remember all the times where Nikon users would push their bias into the face of every other photographer. At those times, they rightfully should have. Does anyone remember the Nikon D300 and the fantastic photos it shot of President Obama during his early years? Or the Nikon D700 and the class-leading high ISO output that it had? Canon and Nikon are absolutely doing what they can to win back customers after slowly losing ground to both Sony and Fujifilm over the years. While the latter two have been doing all that they can to gain market share and continue to push forward, we can say with absolute certainty that Canon and Nikon have done little to nothing to give customers what they want and to adapt with the times. thephoblographer.com »

We've been hearing about a new Nikon full frame mirrorless camera since 2014, and it seems like after four years of more or less sleeping at the wheel that Nikon is finally starting to wake up. We will be releasing an upcoming series of articles on infrared photography that I've been slowly working through the last few weeks, and this amusingly popped up in the list of patent applications published.
In this patent application (2024-019961) Canon shows off a high-speed stacked sensor using three substrate layers. As you can imagine, sensor layers are like a house, the more floors you have the more flexibility you have, and the more room.
Five years ago, the first thing manufacturers talked about when launching a new camera was the sensor. Megapixels made headlines along with backlit designs and sensor stacking. But, has all that changed? Looking at technical tests and rankings like those from DxO Mark, half of all the top ten full frame cameras are more than three years old.
More and more photographers are demanding durable cameras. But what they've also been asking for are brass cameras. The only brands to really do something like this in the past two decades have been Pentax and Leica.
A couple of patent applications caught my eye over the last week – and of course, with me traveling and living out of a suitcase right now I filed it in my head to revisit. These two patents show some unique pixel structures that we are not used to seeing from Canon.
