Report: Some iPhone 11 models to come with ‘Smart Frame’ photo feature

We’ve heard through various rumors that at least some versions of the upcoming new iPhone will feature a super-wide-angle camera as it can already be found on many devices from Apple’s competitors.

However, if a report on 9to5Mac can be trusted, on the Apple phones the super-wide camera will not only provide a wider field-of-view, but also enable a software feature that we have not yet seen anywhere else.

Smart Frame, as the function will allegedly be called, will let you edit a photo’s perspective and framing after capture. To achieve this, when shooting with the primary camera additional image information beyond the frame will be recorded by the super-wide-angle module. Computational imaging methods are then used to tilt and crop for the final result.

As a super-wide-angle camera is required for Smart Frame to work, the feature will only be available on devices with triple camera, likely the successors to last year’s iPhone XS and XS Max.

According to the report the additional image information will be stored locally and deleted after a certain period of time ‘for privacy reasons. ’ As a super-wide-angle camera is required for Smart Frame to work, the feature will only be available on devices with triple camera, likely the successors to last year’s iPhone XS and XS Max. According to rumors the XR successor will have to make do without a super-wide-angle and therefore the Smart Frame feature as well.

All three devices will allegedly feature super-slow-motion video recording on the front camera, however. The launch date is not known at this point but traditionally Apple launches its new iPhones sometime in September.
