Photographers have never been more spoilt for choice when it comes to full-frame prime lenses. Along with own brand optics, whether you shoot with Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji etc, third-party manufacturers like Sigma and Tamron have massively raised their game over the last four to five years.
Now, it looks like Tokina wants to join the party as the brand has launched a new premium 50mm f/1. 4 lens for what the brand calls ‘high-end DSLRs’. In fact, Tokina explains the new 50mm is actually part of its premium Opera series of lenses that are ‘designed to perfectly match recent high-spec full-frame DSLR cameras, which keep requiring high quality optics to be used with. ’ So, photographers using big-megapixel cameras like the Canon 5DS/R or Nikon D850 may crave the resolution power of this lens.
The optic offers full autofocus and a manual focus mode for when you wish to take more control over your focusing and was debuted at the recent CP+ show in Japan. Available for full-frame Canon (EF) and Nikon (F) mounts, the 50mm f/1. 4 is the first Tokina lens to include an electric diaphragm mechanism for Nikon mount versions.
The design of the lens features a wide focus ring so photographers can get a good grip when adjusting focus and the lens is also weather sealed, offering protection against both moisture and dust. This will appeal to professional photographers wishing to capture images in harsh environments.
Internally, the 50mm features an ultrasonic drive motor to provide fast and quiet autofocus that should enable photographers to lock onto subjects quickly. The ultra fast maximum aperture of f/1. 4 will also allow photographers to capture handheld shots in low light conditions, without the risk of camera shake.
Although no pricing information has been released, Tokina has confirmed the 50mm Opera f/1. 4 FF is scheduled to start shipping in summer 2018.
