Owning a pro-spec camera, complete with battery grip and huge lens is great, but there are times when less can indeed be more. Maybe you’re about to set out on a travel adventure and there’s very little room left in your luggage for photo kit? Or maybe, you just don’t want the hassle of a big camera hanging around your neck all day? Whatever your requirements, you should find something to love about the five cameras we’ve shortlisted for your attention….

Canon 200D:

Canon 200D, The smallest and lightest DSLR on the planet has a lot going for it. With an APS-C 24-megapixel sensor, this camera - also known as the SL2 or Kiss X9 - tips the scales at just 453g. Despite the compact dimensions, there’s still room for a 3-inch vari-angle touch-sensitive LCD, and the camera can shoot at 5 frames per second, which is acceptable for everyday photography. A native ISO of 100-25600 expands up to 51200 and there’s also the options to capture Full HD videos of your travels, too. Images can be shared to your phone via the built-in Wi-Fi and the 200D boasts Canon’s advanced Dual Pixel AF autofocus system. Even more amazing is that fact that this tiny DSLR offers a competitive battery life of 650 shots between charges - enough to shoot all day.

Canon's 200D is the smallest DSLR on the market.

Panasonic GX9:

If you are looking for an all-rounder to pack for your travels, the GX9 demands a second look thanks to its feature packed specifications in a compact body that weighs in at just 407g. Built around a 20-megapixel Four-Thirds sensor and Micro Four Thirds lens mount, the GX9 not only offers 5-axis image stabilisation to keep shots sharp, but can also capture a speedy 9 frames per second in burst mode. Images can be lined up on the 3-inch tilting touch-sensitive LCD or using the 2760k-dot Electronic Viewfinder (EVF). 4K movies can be recorded and a 4K Photo mode will enable users to extract 8-megapixel JPEGs from the footage. With a 49-point autofocus system, the GX9 is perfect for all-round travel photography and the 2x crop factor will help you get closer to scenes.

Shoot 4K movies with this pocket rocket.

Olympus E-PL9:

The lightest camera in our top 5 is the E-PL9, a tiny camera that can be stuffed in your jacket pocket and tips the scales at a featherlike 380g - not much heavier than an iPhone. Although the 16-megapixel Four Thirds sensor (paired with a Micro Four Thirds lens mount) isn’t as beefy as other cameras, photographers should still be able to capture images that can be printed to A3 in size. With 121-AF points and an 8. 6 frames per second burst rate, E-PL9 have a huge range of affordable lenses to pick from and the camera also benefits from a 3-inch tilting LCD. 4K movies can be recorded and images can be shared with a smart device thanks to the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology.

The E-PL9 features a 'selfie-friendly' LCD that flips down.

Nikon P1000:

The P1000 isn’t a DSLR or a mirrorless camera, but it could be the perfect travel companion for your adventures. With a fixed lens, the P1000 is a superzoom or bridge camera, that features a very special feature. Boasting a 125x zoom, the P1000 hsa an effective focal length of 24-3000mm - more than enough to cover every photo situation from wide-angle landscapes, mid range portraits right through to more long lens travel photography. With 16-megapixels of resolution, the P1000 also offers Nikon’s Optical Image Stabilisation and a large 3. 2-inch vari-angle LCD. Although the P1000 is a bit heavier than the other cameras in this round-up at 1415g, it’s worth remembering that you don’t need any extra lenses with a superzoom, so this is all you’ll need to carry on your trip. Other features include a 7 frames per second burst rate, a 2359k-dot Electronic Viewfinder, 4K movie capture and built-in Wi-Fi.

Go from 24-3000mm with the twist of a wrist.

GoPro Hero 7 Black:

When you really want to go the extremes of lightweight cameras, there really is only one choice. The latest flagship GoPro offers a 12-megapixel sensor and can capture images at a lightning quick 30 frames per second burst rate - perfect when there’s an action sequence unfolding right before you. Of course the GoPro can shoot video too, and the Hero 7 Black offers ultra high-quality 4K movies, that can be shot at 60p so the footage can be edited for some epic slow motion sequences. More importantly though, the GoPro is both tiny, lightweight (116g) and built to take everything the travel photographer could throw at it as it’s waterproof to 10 metres and crushproof too. Other features include voice activation, a timelapse mode, Hypersmooth stabilisation and a touch-sensitive LCD.

The GoPro is tough, compact and can take the knocks of travelling.
