After wild speculation, Nikon has official announced the development of its new mirrorless lens system, which is expected to be unveiled in mid August. Along with a press release to journalists, Nikon shared a teaser video showcasing what is expected to be its new mirrorless camera.
Although details were thin on the ground, there were a few very interesting takeaways from the information that was shared.
The release said; ‘The mirrorless camera and NIKKOR lenses that are in development have enabled the pursuit of a new dimension in optical performance, with the adoption of a new mount. ’ So, this officially confirms that there will definitely be a new lens system to go with the Nikon full-frame mirrorless camera.
This may raise a few eyebrows for photographers thinking their current collection of Nikon lenses may be useless, but Nikon appeared quick to ease those worries; ‘a new mount adapter is being developed for the new mirrorless camera. This will work with the F-Mount NIKKOR lenses that are part of the Nikon digital-SLR system, adding to the variety of choices for photographers. ’
What’s more, the release gave a clear indication that Nikon plans to run the mirrorless system alongside its range of DSLR cameras, rather than move from one technology to the other; ‘Nikon will continue to lead imaging culture with the launch of the new mirrorless camera, as well as with the continued development of Nikon digital-SLR cameras, providing consumers with the choices to enjoy the unique values of either system. ’
Photographers around the world are holding their breath for the arrival of the new Nikon mirrorless system. Rumours suggest two cameras will be released in August and Nikon’s official release pointed to the system being able to capture high performance results; ‘With this new mirrorless camera and NIKKOR lenses, we are committed to providing photographers with the ability to capture images that are richer and more vivid than ever before. ’
So are you excited about Nikon's new mirrorless camera and will existing Nikon photographers be making the switch to mirrorless?
