When rumours of new technology hit the internet, camera brands are often quick to distance themselves or deny the rumours completely. So, it took the industry by surprise when just a few days ago several websites reported that Nikon are working on new Mirrorless technology.

More surprising still was that, when photo news website DP Review contacted the manufacturer for comment, a Nikon spokesperson confirmed the rumours and stated that the brand was; ‘developing new mirrorless products that build upon Nikon’s strengths’, Furthermore, the spokesperson stated the products would; ‘offer the performance prospective customers expect, including the ultimate optics performance, image-processing technologies, strength and durability, and operation. ’

A spokesman confirmed Nikon are working on new mirrorless products

As mentioned in the statement, these won’t be the first Nikon mirrorless products on the market. Back in 2011, the brand launched the first of its Nikon 1 range of cameras which, while certainly small and portable, lagged behind Canon and Fuji’s range of APS-C sensor mirrorless cameras and even Olympus and Panasonic’s Micro Four-Third sensor offerings. Instead, the Nikon 1 cameras used 1-inch sensors, although the all-weather 14-megapixel Nikon AW1 did receive praise for its ability to be used underwater without an additional housing.

The AW1 was perhaps the pick of Nikon's previous mirrorless cameras

It’s likely Nikon will be hoping a new range of Mirrorless cameras will see an upturn in fortune. Earlier this year Nikon cancelled the release of its DL series, a range of premium compacts, and 2017 has also seen a number of product recalls, most recently with issues surround the D750's shutter mechanism.

Could Nikon's new mirrorless offering sport a medium format sensor like the Hasselblad X1D or Fuji GFX, which were released in the last year

Nikon could choose to follow Fuji and Hasselblad and target the medium format mirrorless market, which has seen two big hitters, the Hasselblad X1D and the Fuji GFX released within the last 12 months. So, what would you like to see from a new Nikon mirrorless system?
