Google has announced the replacement to its Pixel 2 smartphone series and the new Pixel 3 comes with some headline-grabbing features, including an upgraded camera system and new shooting features.

First up, let’s talk about the camera. Unlike rivals like Apple or LG, who’s cameras feature dual or triple cameras of the rear of the device, the Pixel features a single rear camera with a f/1. 8 max aperture and 12. 2-megapixels of resolution. However, Google has introduced a ‘Super Res’ mode that allows users to zoom in without any loss in quality.

The main camera also features a dual pixel phase detection autofocus system and both optical and electronic image stabilisation. Along with a flicker sensor the rear camera can also film ultra high quality 4K video at 30fps, up to 120fps at Full HD or 240fps at 720p.

At the front of the device, there are dual 8-megapixel cameras which can be used in a standard view mode, or an ultra wide-angle ‘group selfie’ mode with a f/2. 2 aperture and a 97° field of view. What’s more, Google is offering unlimited online storage for photos and videos.

Shooting 4K video, the front camera offers an ultra-wide view.

Built around a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor unit and offering 4GM of RAM, the devices are available with either 64GB or 128GB of storage. Other photo-related features include Top Shot, which uses AI to analyse a burst of images and recommend a frame where nobody is blinking. The screens are big, with the Pixel 3 offering a 5. 5-inch display and the larger Pixel 3 XL a 6. 3-inch display.

The Pixel 3 includes an ‘Adaptive Battery’ feature that Google explain ‘learns your behavior over time and limits battery for apps you use less often’. The Pixel 3 can be used for wireless charging too. Available for pre-order now, the Pixel 3 costs $799, while the Pixel 3 XL is priced at $899.
