Sony has added yet another lens to its ever-growing selection of optics after the release of the new FE 35mm F1. 8 wide-angle, which is a lightweight and compact prime lens. The release means Sony now offers 34 full-frame E-mount lenses and 52 E-mount lenses in total but here’s what’s great about this new lens and why Sony shooters should add it to their kit bag… One - Full-frame design: The FE 35mm F1.

8 is designed for use on full-frame cameras, such as the Sony A7RIII or Sony a9. However the 35mm lens can also be used with Sony’s range of E-mount APS-C cameras, too . Infact, when used with an APS-C crop sensor camera like the Sony A6500, the lens offers an effective focal length of 52. 5mm.

Two - Versatile focal length:

35mm lenses have long been revered by professionals thanks to their versatility. Capable of capturing everything from landscapes to portraiture, the lens is also suitable for food photography, architecture imagery and even street photography.

Three - Small and light:

Make no mistake, this is a small lens, measuring just 65. 6 mm (diameter) by 73. 0mm (length) and tipping the scales at only 280g, which is around the average weight of a smartphone. The portable dimensions offer Sony shooters a lightweight alternative to the brand’s heavier G Master optics.

The FE 35mm F1. 8 is designed for use on full-frame cameas but can also be used with APS-C models, too.

Four - Fast maximum aperture:

As you may guess from the name, the FE 35mm F1. 8 has a fast maximum aperture of f/1. 8, meaning it only creates a shallow depth of field, but will also help deliver faster shutter speeds in low light conditions compared to a slower, variable aperture lens.

When used with an APS-C camera, the focal length jumps to around 50mm - perfect for portraits. Image by Sony

Five - Weather-proof credentials:

Want to take your camera out when the rain starts to fall or the dust starts to blow? Well, you’ll be pleased to hear the FE 35mm F1. 8 lens is dust and moisture-resistant, making it suitable for everyday professional use.

The lightweight lens is weather resistant.

Six - Fast autofocus:

The FE 35mm F1. 8 delivers a decent amount when it comes to autofocus. For example, the lens uses Sony’s linear-motor AF drive system technology for fast and quiet autofocus. What’s more, the lens also boasts a customisable focus hold button and a focus mode switch for instantaneous switching between auto and manual focus. The lens also boasts a closest focusing distance of just 22cm, enabling users to get frame-filling images of smaller subjects.

Seven - Great for video:

As videographers know, 35mm is an excellent focal length for shooting footage and, thanks to that fast f/1. 8 and speedy autofocus system, the FE 35mm F1. 8 should perform well as a lightweight run-and-gun lens.

The optic boasts a wide focus ring and a customisable focus hold button.

Eight - Impressive image quality:

Sony say the FE 35mm F1. 8’s build includes an aspherical element to suppress aberration and deliver high resolution throughout the entire image frame. There’s also a 9-blade circular aperture design to deliver impressive bokeh, too.

Nine - Reasonable price:

Sony lenses can tend to be on the more expensive side, but the FE 35mm F1. 8 seems to buck this trend as the lens will be priced at $750/ˆ700 when it starts shipping in August.

Sony has managed to keep the price of the lens relatively low. Image by Sony
