It’s often the case that major launches are preceded by a whirlwind of rumours stating features and specifications that may or may not appear. Luckily though, Sony has done the decent thing and posted on their website about an exciting new camera launch so there’s no need for rumours.
Sony is officially building a dedicated full-frame video camera that will feature 4K recording and will be aspect agnostic, meaning you’ll be able to select from different formats, such as full-frame (36x24mm), Super35, 4:3 and 17:9. Although no pictures have been released, the build is likely to be focus on the pro market with ports and plug-ins for accessories such as monitors, external sound recorders and more.
The new camera, which Sony are calling a ‘digital motion picture camera system’ will use both XAVC and Sony’s 16bit RAW workflow system. It will also be compatible with Sony’s range of CineAlta camera accessories, such as viewfinders, audio recorders and memory cards. Sony has good pedigree in this field and the CineAlta range broke new ground back in 1999 when the company developed the first 24p digital camera (the HDW-F900), which was used to film the Star Wars prequels and paved the way for HDR technology to be used in today’s DSLRs.
A 4K full-frame high-end video solution would be a welcome addition to pro film-makers seeking a portable camera that makes the most of Sony’s impressive sensor technology. Although no pricing information has been released, it’s expected the camera will launch in early 2018. So, what other features would you like to see on Sony’s new video camera?
