It’s been seven years since the release of Nikon’s previous flagship telephoto zoom lens, the AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2. 8G ED VR II back in 2009, and a solid fourteen years since the first generation AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.
8G ED VR was announced in 2002.
Now Nikon has released on schedule the latest and hopefully best iteration of the lens, calling it the AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2. 8E FL ED VR. The lens retains all of the features that made it an essential piece of kit for Nikon pros, such as Vibration Reduction technology and Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor for faster and quieter AF.
The latest model now offers four stops of VR up from 3. 5 stops, and the optical design itself has been upgraded. The lens now features 22 elements, with 6 ED, 1 fluorite and 1 high refractive index element. Nikon has also duly updated their coating, and offer a Nano Crystal Coat to reduce flare and ghosting, while fluorine coatings on the front and rear glass help prevent smudging when they are accidently touched.
It also features an electromagnetic diaphragm for consistent auto-exposure control during burst mode, and the ability to adjust the aperture in both live view and movie mode for all Nikon camera bodies.
All that glass isn’t light, though. The lens weighs 1. 4kg since it’s housed in a weather-sealed, waterdrop-resistant, and anti-dust exterior composed of magnesium alloy. Nikon is expecting this to brought around the world in all conditions, and it should be a versatile lens that will survive both a battleground or a spilled glass of champagne on the catwalk.
The lens will be on display at the 2016 PhotoPlus Expo in New York this week, along with the newly announced PC Nikkor 19mm f/4E ED. Both lenses will be available for sale in November, and the AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2. 8E FL ED VR will set you back US$2799. 95.
