Canon are rumoured to be scheduling the next generation Canon EF 600mm f/4 DO BR lens to be released in the second half of 2017. The gigantic white lens was first displayed as a prototype at the PhotoPlus Expo 2015 to much fanfare; however, the super-telephoto hasn’t been seen since.
It was initially billed as a next generation lens that includes two proprietary optical assets to improve chromatic aberration and dual-layer diffractive optical elements for reducing the physical length of the lens.
This would make the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS DO BR USM one of the most compact super-telephotos and will surely be music to the ears of any sports and wildlife shooter tired of having to create a custom bag to lug around a massive piece of kit.
Canonwatch speculates that that any announcement for a big white “L” lens should be taken with a pinch of salt because rumoured dates rarely happen to be correct.
In fact, sources suggest that Canon will be testing a majority of updated white prime lenses at the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. In any case, super-telephotos come at a premium price so those interested should probably start saving up for one now or be prepared to shill a kidney come release!
