One of the biggest fears photographers experience when buying into a new camera system is the worry the brand won’t keep up with lens choices to use with their new camera. However, it’s becoming very clear that Canon shooters buying the brand’s full-frame mirrorless models (the R and RP) have absolutely nothing to worry about.
This is because Canon has announced six news optics for the RF system, and the list makes for interesting reading. All six lenses are designed for full-frame sensors and will be rolled out before the year is out, so what should RF shooters expect?
Well, let’s start with not one, but two great lens for portrait photographers. The RF 85mm F1. 2L USM is a large aperture mid-telephoto prime lens, which Canon says ‘offers the ultimate performance for advanced and professional portrait photographers’. But it’s the RF 85mm F1. 2L USM DS which has really got tongues wagging as it feature Defocus Smoothing technology that look set to crank the bokeh up to 11. Canon says the optic ‘offers a combination of beautifully smooth, defocused foreground and background bokeh and a super-fast aperture to produce breathtaking portraits. ’
Next up is the general purpose, fast aperture RF 24-70mm F2. 8L IS USM lens, which will cover photographers for a wide variety of shooting situations, such as landscapes and travel photography, right through to weddings, documentary or wedding shoots. And talking about landscape photography, Canon mirrorless shooters will be able to go ultra-wide with the development of the RF 15-35mm F2. 8L IS USM, which will not only help you capture a vast view, but also features a fast, f/2. 8 maximum aperture.
Number five on Canon’s new lens list - the RF 70-200mm F2. 8L IS USM - will grab the attention of wildlife and sports photographers and the last lens to be announced is the RF 24-240mm F4-6. 3 IS USM. This is the only variable aperture lens from the six optics announced by Canon and, thanks to that huge focal range, is squarely aimed at the travel photographer who wants to capture different scenes but may not have the luxury of space for extra lenses.
No details on the price-tags for the six lenses or their exact release dates have been announced, but as the optics are scheduled on the roadmap for 2019, it’s likely we'll see at least some of the six brought to market in the next few months.
