The Nikon Df Was One of Their Most Perfect Cameras

Step back in time to the last moment you physically felt your heart beating from excitement. That's the feeling the Nikon Df is bound to give you. We're a website that champions the future, but we also adore the past.

And the Nikon Df was and still is one of the most perfect bridges. It was a DSLR meant to get retro. Created back when everyone was trying to go retro, Nikon paid homage to their past. If you've ever held a Nikon F camera, you'll know what I'm talking about. Ergonomically speaking, that camera is the one that everything else pretty much drew from. It was built incredibly solid, and it was always reliable. That DNA stuck with Nikon, and that's why the Nikon Df can still be had today. And in a time where we're staring at screens all day and night, the Nikon Df is a refreshing change. .

Nikon Was Almost Named ‘Nikorette’

In a documented but little-known fact, Nikon was very close to being instead named “Nikorette.” The name was only changed when executives were afraid that the word sounded “weak.” Capa Camera Web recently published an article (first spotted by Nikon Rumors) that details the history of Nikon’s name, and in it reveals that Nikon was […] petapixel.com »

This is the Eye AF Coming to the Nikon Z6 and Z7

Nikon Europe just published this 15-second video that provides a preview of the Eye-Detection AF functionality that’s coming to the Z6 and Z7 mirrorless cameras. Gear of the Year 2018 - Barney's choice: Nikon Z7

This year seems like it went by in a flash (although thinking back to some of the news headlines I'm still tempted to say 'good riddance'). In the photo industry, 2018 has definitely felt like a year of transitions: not least because this was the year that Canon and Nikon finally entered the full-frame mirrorless market, and in so doing began the slow process of moving beyond their respective legacy EF and F mounts. dpreview.com »

Nikon D3: The camera that changed everything

In 2007, after several years of lagging behind Canon in the enthusiast and professional DSLR market, Nikon was doing alright. Not spectacularly, but they were hanging in there. The D200 was a popular and capable enthusiast model, and the professional D2x was a significant advance on the muddled 'h' and 's' releases of the past. dpreview.com »

Throwback Thursday: Nikon D70

In 2004 I had to make the same grueling decision as many fellow photographers: Canon EOS 300D (Digital Rebel) or Nikon D70 - which one was to become my first digital SLR? The Canon, which had been launched in August 2003 was the first true consumer-level DSLR and had been on my wish list for a few months when, in January 2004, Nikon threw a curve ball and launched a direct competitor to the EOS 300D: the D70, the company's first sub-$1000 digital SLR. dpreview.com »

Throwback Thursday: the Nikon D80

Ten megapixels ought to be enough for anybody. It was ten years ago this past September that Nikon introduced its 10 megapixel, twin-dial D80 DSLR. It was also ten years ago that my dad picked up a shiny new example of one to act as a backup to his workhorse studio camera, the D200. dpreview.com »

This Vintage Camera Video Ad Was Shot With the Nikon F5

These days, it's not uncommon to see timelapse videos shot with just still cameras; but it was very uncommon to see it back in 1997 and done with the Nikon F5. But a vintage ad (yes, because the 90s are vintage) This commercial was shot back in 1997 by Alastair Thain using the Nikon F5 camera! According to the YouTube description, this was the first time a stills camera had ever been used to shoot "moving images". thephoblographer.com »
