Is this the moment Nikon strikes back against rivals like Canon and Sony? The brand has just officially announced that the D6, the replacement for Nikon’s flagship D5 sports and wildlife camera is on its way.
The development announcement is the first time Nikon have confirmed the impending arrival of the D6 and the announcement comes on the 20th anniversary of the single-digit D series of professional cameras that started with the D1 way back in 1999.
The D6 will replace Nikon's current flagship DSLR, the D5.
While exact specifications are pretty thin on the ground, Nikon has said that the D6 will be; ‘most advanced DSLR to date,’. While reports on internet rumour websites suggest the D6 could be the first Nikon DSLR to feature In Body Image Stabilisation (IBIS), which if true would be a huge step forward and a game-changing feature to help it stand apart from rivals such as the Canon 1DX MkII.
Other rumoured specifications for the forthcoming D6 include new dual EXPEED processors to improve performance, Dual CFExpress memory card slots and improved silent shooting modes.
It's rumoured the new Nikon D6 will feature IBIS technology.
In the same announcement, Nikon also explained it was developing a new telephoto lens to accompany the D6. The AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2. 8E FL ED SR VR F will be a telephoto optic with a constant f/2. 8 aperture throughout its zoom range that also boasts Vibration Reduction (VR) technology.
No pricing information was unveiled, nor was a release date, although it’s rumoured the camera will arrive in late 2019.
