Stephen Dowling, founder of Kosmo Foto, has shared a video highlighting five compact film cameras that you can use to get started in film photography without breaking the bank. As film photography continues to claw back at least some of the user base it once had in the late 90s and early 2000s, the price of many working 35mm compact cameras has increased.

There are, however, a few gems that offer a quality 35mm film photography experience that can be had for less than $100. This video, shared to the Kosmo Foto YouTube Channel, goes over five of them, each of which are from the 1980s and offer autofocus shooting.

A close-up shot of the cheapest of the five cameras highlighted in the video, the Pentax Sport DX.

Around five minutes are spent on each of the following camera models: the Pentax Sport DX, the Ricoh FF-9, the Konica MG, the Minolta AF-C and the Pentax PC35AF-M. In addition to going over the features and functionality of each of the camera, Dowling shares sample photos from each of the cameras.

It’s a bit of a lengthy watch, but it’s a great history lesson on each of the cameras and should help point-and-shoot you in the right direction if you happen to receive a roll of film or two in your stocking this year.
