BlackMagic has released the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, a next generation handheld 4K digital camera that is packed with high-end specifications yet affordable priced at just $1,295. Shooting 4K at up to 60 frames per second and 120 frames per second at HD, the Pocket Cinema camera also features dual native ISO up to 25,600 enabling footage to be captured in low light conditions.
The lightweight and compact camera is built around a full-size Four-Thirds sensor that offers 4096x2160 of resolution and 13-stops of dynamic range. However, because the camera uses Micro Four-Thirds lenses, this reduces the crop factor so lenses can capture a wider focal length. While the mount is MFT, adaptors enable optics from other brand’s, such as Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Leica and Panavision to be used too.
The memory options are as versatile as the lenses and the Pocket Cinema camera serves up three types of media to record to. Images and high-definition video can be recorded to regular SD cards. Higher performance UHS-II cards can be used for recording Ultra HD in ProRes at up to 60 frames per second and RAW at up to 30 frames per second. 12-bit RAW footage can be recorded to CFast cards but, for longer recording times, an external SSD or flash disk using the built in USB-C Expansion Port can be utilised. Footage can edited directly from the memory cards using DaVinci Resolve Studio software that’s included with the camera.
Video scenes can be composed and then reviewed using the 5-inch touch-sensitive LCD and there are also ports for an professional-spec mini XLR input with 48 volts of phantom power, headphones and a 3. 5mm mic jack. The new BlackMagic uses LP-E6 batteries found in Canon DSLRs such as the 5D MkIV and a 110 - 220 volt plug pack is also included with the camera. 3D LUTs can be applied to the LCD so users can monitor the shot with the desired color and look and a built-in speaker provides audio during playbacks.
Unbelievably, for all this specifications, the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema 4K camera is priced at just $1,295, which is sure to attract both aspiring filmmakers looking to take their first step on the videography ladder and more experienced professionals looking for a lightweight and compact B-roll camera that provides quality footage. As the camera was launched at the NAB Show in Las Vegas, you can watch a video of the launch event here.
